Feedback / Focus group

The main thing that was said was our sound for our video, due to use not bringing out a boom mic our sound was not as good as it could have been, but if I was to redo a 3 minute documentary i would definitely bring a boom mic. The next thing that was said was out camera angle as it was slanted a bit, but this problem was not our fault as we was given a broken tripod which made use improvise and use the chair to hold the camera while we recorded.

Practice Documentary

This is our practice Documentary before we did your real one.

3 Minute Documentary

Task 1b final

Task 1b

Factual programming has a few different genres which can be presented a total of six different documentary modes which are expository, observational, participatory, reflexive, and performative. There are also some conventions in factual programming that are realism; dramatisation; narrativization.
Narrativization documentaries are documentaries told in the way of a story or series of story the event is acted out with a beginning ,middle and end with key points to the story it sometimes has a point or a moral depending on what you are watching. However mainly what this documentary type does is create its own reality by using these characters as a way to illustrative the subject

Realism- Shows actuality footage(real footage), techniques that would be seen would be things like; handheld camera, interviews with people involved in the topic/accident etc, statistics and graphs to support the facts. They may also show the the setting up of camera's before the filming.

Dramatisation- mainly creating a drama out of a real life situation so may include things like cliff hangers, voice overs, music and this is all done through a re-enactment of the situation.

Gangland

Gangland is an original two-part documentary that gains unprecedented access to London’s most notorious young gangs, as they document what life is really like as part of a contemporary gang. Gangland documentary is film in an expository format. An expository documentary will expose a person or a topic. Expository documentaries will have an commentator talking over the images or videos explaining the story. In gangland you can see this and hear through the documentary, as this documentary was about the most notorious young gangs it had language that most other viewers would not understand so the there was voice overs breaking down the slang used for example a guy said ‘I will probably buss case’, the voiceover said this line but added that ‘buss case’ means win the case in court. This type of documentary had a large number of views because it is an expository documentary exposing thing that most people would not know about so most of the views would find it interesting to watch. I believe that the main convention in this is realism because this is based real people and their lives with no scrips, and most of the footage in this was filmed by the gang members as none of the directors or camera men were allowed to film there self for identity reasons, there are also some re-enactments of events to show the stories to get a better picture. A Dramatisation documentary is often a dramatic twist on what happened in a previous event but illustrating the situation to make it seem more dramatic than it actually was. However this technique is effective as it brings the audience closer and engages them in the documentary. In this documentary there was a scene that was reenacted of a gun that had a shoot off with another gang the reenactment could of been acted out more dramatic that what actually happened with a twist as there was only one side of the story being told

The secret life of a five year old

The secret life of a five year old is a show set in a school which has hidden cameras that capture the daily life of the kids and also captures the tantrums and expressions when kids meet for the first time. This show is observational it observes the daily life of the children. As the children are young the director does not need to worry about the children finding out they are being recorded this also means maintaining the observational mode allowing the children to act naturally, so the audience get a better view and sense on how the children act when with other kids. The main convention of this TV program is realism as it is representing young children that shows there life and how they act and express their thoughts and feeling to other children. There is no presenter during the show as it is observational but there is a voiceover that helps explain what the situation throughout the program as the it might be confusing about what is going on, there are also experts in psychology that analyse the children behaviour.

News Report BBC Business Live 27/02/2017

The news presenters are the people that introduce the factual program. The presenter can introduce the stories in different ways, on the BBC the presenter will walk to the left side on the studio to the screen and talk about a story with the statistics popping up on the screen to give the viewer a better image. Another way to present is if they stood in front of a green screen with relevant photos in the background like a weather forecast. The dress code of a presenter is normally formal and profession in the studio but outside on live reports they will probably be dressed to suit the weather. They also talk formally and uses appropriate language that will not upset the audience. The presenters present the stories as non-bias as the BBC has regulations that won't allow them to take a side of a story. The field reporter is someone that reports from another area which corresponds with the story that the presenter present. For example in the studio they was talking with a guest about Leetchi and online platform that has 7 million users in 150 countries, then it went to a live reporter using the software with a worker from Leetchi. There are many different field reporters, some are over sea and some are local. Reporters are often granted inside information about important updates, such as injuries, because they have the credential necessary to do so. Links to the studio is where a news team in a certain studio may want to discuss a story with a different news studio to trade information that they may not have. An example of this in the news report is when the BBC had a live discussion about trinity mirror results with a guy called Michael. This is also good as the audience may feel like that are part of the discussion and feel more involved.  The mode of address to how the reporter presents and address the news to the viewer this will depend on the target audience. An example in this BBC news report it is presented using formal and precise language, whereas cbbc 60 second news is less formal because they have a different audience watching. Interviewing is when a reporter will question another person to add content to the program. There are a many types of interviews, but the type will depend on the objectives of talking to the interviewee. The BBC will sometimes do pubic interviews to get a view from the public, this helps to make the report look unbiased. In News certain stories and discussion there will be an expert in the specific area to provide facts and figures to inform the audience. This then reassures the audience, and provides them with extra information to decide on their opinion. Facts and statistics also are used to inform the audience to create a more knowledgeable approach to the factual programme. However these all are often used in specialist areas such as politics or technology. A witness is also used in stories to inform the audience but with a different approach, as it's to give more knowledgeable approach to what has happened than the facts associated with the content. The witnesses would be interviewed in order to provide the factual programme with original content. Actuality footage as the name states is footage from that has been filmed on the location a certain news story this footage creates tension in the media industry as they add certain key things to make the footage grab the audience. With commentary over the footage from the newsreader is help explains the story in further detail.

Tattoo Fixers

Tattoo Fixers is a British reality television series based in Hackney in London, broadcast on E4, from 23 June 2015. The series follows helping members of public cover up some of the rudest and crudest tattoos. Tattoo fixers is reality television program which has the main characters that are some sort of small tattoo celebrities, that have real guests with stories of their mistakes from there tatoos and how they want to fix it or change. This show is interactive as the viewers can feel involved as the stories get reactions from the main hosts and the viewers when you are watching at home. There are voice overs when they are showing the new tattoos with a recap of what it was before and how they got it again. The main convention of this TV program is a narrativization type of factual program as it has a short type of stories in the series. However mainly the show creates it own reality as there is no script for the charters.

Task 1a Final

Task 1a Analysis
I have chosen to talk about a documentary called “The Lawful killing” is about the police shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, North London in August 2011 that caused the worst riots in recent British history. With dramatized reconstructions of events and interviews with his family and the police.  I will talk about the ethical issues in this documentary and the legal issues, I will also compare the BBC news report on the south oxford and compare the issues.

Accuracy: The director Jaimie D'Cruz had to be careful with any of the information that he was out in this documentary said that it will be telling “the hidden truth” about the killing so accuracy can be a huge issue. This is because if they mislead or incorrectly give information that the documentary isn’t real, it is miss informing the audience and giving them false information. This can result in confusion and complaints as the data given isn’t reliable. Also documentaries can be used to gather research by others and if the information isn’t reliable, than the researchers information is also unreliable. This does not mean the same thing as telling the truth as you can't prove that everything is true for example the police that go interviews all had a different type of story of what happened when the shooting happened. In documentaries is vital to give the right information about names, places, age, quotes as if these are not accurate it will lead people to not believing in a documentary or believing false information. As for any reports from people it key to to ensure that that you quote them correctly as what they said in the correct consent. As for the news report they need to be accurate as a media organisation will be judge on the accuracy and reliability or its journalism, which must be well-sourced, supported by strong evidence and tested  and clear of the point and unambiguous. Accuracy is the paramount principle of trust especially as the BBC is the most viewed news program in the UK and is trusted by many views. any verified facts for example report on oxford schools losing money and others gaining, in this report they give out a report that 130 schools will lose out on money in the parts of oxford and 133 will gain a raise of 0.8%. This is information that should have been analysed and accurate from where they got it from before reporting it to the public. In 2011 the BBC reported a fake and very inaccurate news story on the killing of Mark Dugan, say that he shot a police officer which was not true and gave an impression that the BBC news is not got journalist reporters.

Balance- Balance is offering both sides of the story to whoever is viewing the stories rather than being bias and only favouring one side of the story and not letting the audience to decide on a side for them self. The lawful killing gives both sides of the story of the killing, it actually give many different views and stories of the killing, this gave people an option on whose story they wanted to believe, as some people said that the police had planted the gun as it ended up 14ft on the other side of the wall and was not seen or found by any of the 14 police officers that was at the scene, while others say that he through the gun before he go out the car but say that they saw the gun in his hand. The BBC news just present their news from the reports they get and then get views from other members outside the BBC like the public to get other views on the situation.

Objectivity- Objectivity in factual programmes is where the interviewer has considered the questions he/she will ask someone, taking into account accuracy, relativity, sensitivity and depth and speed of the interview. Objectivity is also when you are not influenced by your own personal views or opinions but instead consider other people's opinions and beliefs and are open to listen to multiply opinions. The information that is presented in the documentary are important as the audience will make their judgment based on the footage that has been shown. Being objective is being able to put an argument across and presenting all of the research gathered without being biased or impartial, but, giving the audience a chance to make up their own mind or opinion on the subject being discussed. Lawful killing was objectivity as it was not based on one person's personal view, the film was based on many different views and theories. The BBC news reports are also not based on personal opinions but they do interviews with people to get their views to get other views from other opinions and beliefs.

Impartiality- To be impartial is the ability to not take either side of a story, to be neutral. This is a very important thing to remember when telling a story otherwise you could cause controversy among your audience. In the documentary I don't think there was not any impartiality as it was not more of everyone's opinions and some hypothesis. The BBC new report is required to be unbiased. The TV channel is a different type of news and TV channel as it is paid by the British public as opposed to advertising and other endorsements. In the news report that I watch it was impartial and did not take either side. To make an impartial judgment journalist have to gather relevant arguments and present them properly so they don't appear to be biased. If you aren’t impartial and bring your own opinion and judgement into a topic your viewers will be displeased and will probably think other information you say will be biased, unfair and based around your own personal judgement.

Subjectivity- Subjectivity is basically the complete opposite to Objectivity. Subjectivity is judgment only considering your own opinion that does not depend on actual facts or statistics. In the documentary some of it was based on own opinions and some was based on so hyponasty but there was not that many evidence that could prove anything as they don’t include actual facts and statistics it is seen as subjective. In the film Lawful killing there was a interview in the documentary where someone was saying that she saw a cop pick up a gun out the car and placing it somewhere else but the footage on the cameras say that she was not in sight to see what she was talking about and this interview was considered as judgment from her own opinion. The BBC can be subjectivity with their reports as it is not allowed.

Opinion- An opinion is a personal through or view. This is a view of judgment about something, not necessarily being based on facts or knowledge. This is usually a personal view of a matter or belief about a particular thing however the same set of values can be interpreted differently. An example of this is in the documentary the family had their own opinion on the situation based on their own thought because they was not given any news. The BBC news report also had dome options on the report but it was not from the BBC them self as they are not allowed to do that it was a teacher interviewed on the view of the budget cut.

Bias- Bias is promoting one side or opinion over another and making it seem like a better or a more valued opinion as if it is the only opinion people should have and listen too. Being bias can be an issue as it could lead to complaints and Ofcom can get involved if a news report is bias or even a documentary, unlike in America where they have new channels that are bias and only let what they want to be aired on their news reports and websites. In the documentary there were not anything that was bias, neither was there anything bias in the news report. In the documentary the film was not bias in the way it was presented as they did do one side of the story from one view then did the story again from another view. The BBC are also the same they don't take one side from another as they are not allowed to so they just resent the reports in a no bias way and let the public decide.

Representation- Representation is when someone or something is being portrayed in a certain way. A documentary if you wanted the audience to have a particular view on someone, you would have to represent that person in a particular way, either in a good way or bad. Before this documentary the person who it was about was represented as a bad person because of some bad news reports but the director represented the documentary as an open option from the views to choose what they think probably happened. Sometimes you see positive representation, this can be done to cause the audience to have sympathy towards someone or something. However, sometimes you can also see negative representation, victimising individuals or groups. An example in the documentary Lawful killing they presented in om both sides to make it seem like they did it balanced to be secure on the public reactions but there are lots of arguments that it still was not balanced as the police did not provide a lot of answers. The BBC News representation is making sure that no-one gets left out when there is a news report and making sure that nobody who was or being affected by the occurrence doesn’t get neglected and there are no omissions from the report. An example is when the BBC do interviews with politics they also do interviews with the public do show the representing of everyone involved.

Access- Access important or filmmakers and program makers. For making the documentary Lawful Killing they may end up capturing a members of the public in the footage, and the producers probably would have had to obtain permission, as in the film some people do not want to be shown or have any details of them to be given out. This is why they have to ask for permission to give to details and face and voice reveals because they are not allowed to make a programme or show an interview about someone or something without receiving permission to film it and show it as it's not legal. TV News coverage must also make sure whenever they interview someone, whether they are: a victim, a family or a witness whatever they say is their real thoughts because news programmes, especially, aren’t allowed to tell them what to say before they film it or what they show on TV is the real answer and hasn’t been edited or changed because this can cause heated arguments. An example is the BBC News need to have news reports to give the audience interested with stories like things that are happening in the world but to report things from the globe the need to get footage and permission to report. An example is the war in Syria there are footages of civilian running and injured from the bombs. Some of the footages were people that were at the scene are nearby that caught the images and video and the BBC somehow would of contacted them to ask for permission to use the resources on their websites and new reports. There is really no differences between the access for News and documentaries s as they both have the same rules for produce their videos and images.

Privacy - Privacy is in News and Documentary are things that must be kept in the media industry. when making a film or program the maker must be aware that there are laws on privacy that must be followed and be aware of otherwise the programme will cause commotion because broadcasting an interview or just having them in the footage without their consent will involve infringement of privacy laws that were brought for people who didn’t want to be known. Documentary makers need to be careful as a lot of documentaries involve interviews and some that involve controversial or sensitive topics, interviewees may want to remain anonymous or personal reasons.  Some TV channels interviews may be different from other but the law against privacy infringement stay the same and anyone found breaching these could face serious consequences in fines and bans so privacy from new must be obeyed for the news programs safety as well as others.

Contract with viewers - The contract with the viewer is an rule that means the producer declares the program is a factual programme and interesting and then describe what the show is about and as made a pact with your viewers to supply them with the information you said you would as well as it being precise, accurate and interesting. An example is the lawful killing said that is was going to tell the story that was not told 5 years ago about the killing and that’s what the documentary did in some type of way. As well as a News report would give a brief of the stories that will be coming up later on in the program.

Dianni's task 2

by Dianni

Task 2b Research
Carry out research into primary sources (contacts and participants, interviews, locations)
For our documentary we will have a main host his name is Trey and he that will be introducing and explaining what is going on and he will also be trying out the food as well as Dianni, Tim and Victor. The locations that we have chosen will be Shoreditch and Walthamstow. Walthamstow will be the location that will be buying some of the food and Shoreditch is where we will be tasting the food, we decided to use Shoreditch because it is a nice area with different art. If for any reason we can't shoot in Shoreditch we have a backup plan to shoot a restaurant near London Bridge as we have contacts in the restaurant that will allow us to shoot if we asked.
Research existing programmes and films that may include topics or techniques you enjoy: look at both news and a range of documentary formats and styles to inspire you (secondary research)
The secret of your food is a series on BBC that shows Michael Mosley and James Wong explore the sensations, tastes and flavours in our food from everyday food in the UK and abroad. This is similar to our 3 minute documentary as ours is about tasting different types of food from different types of backgrounds. Oklahoma State Fair has a food judging competition that lets people try out different food and then they get asked different types of questions about the food and what they thought could've been improved and what was the best. A technique that I liked was when the interviewer was questioning questions or the interviewee was describing the food there was cut always of the food and chefs making it.
The Chicken Connoisseur is a guy that goes around to different chicken shops and orders food and then reviews it. The style of the videos is similar to our documentary as it shows him ordering the food and eating it then after he does a review on each thing he ate then rates it out of 5. This is like our documentary accept we will be judging what country makes the better dish and we will also get the public reviews, this YouTube series is also a funny thing to watch and that is the type of documentary that we would like to produce.
